This article explains how to hardwire a tablet to the Soundcraft Ui24R. A wired connection is especially useful for portable band gigs in venues where Wi-Fi is congested or unreliable.

With a small amount of additional equipment, you can connect your existing Android tablet directly to the mixer for stable control. As we use the same mixer across multiple venues, all of our gear is set up with portability in mind.

Previously, we used a small HDMI monitor and USB mouse, but this setup proved to be cumbersome. Over time, leaving the HDMI cable connected to the mixer also caused the port to become damaged and unreliable.

So now we connect a tablet via Ethernet when required. On the Soundcraft Ui24R, use the lower Ethernet port — the one located closest to the HDMI socket.

What you need:

  1. Android Tablet that supports USB-C ethernet. We use the "top of the line" Lenovo tablets around the AU$250 as they are cheap and fast. The tablets we have used that work are
    • Lenovo Tab M11 TB330XU
    • Lenovo Idea Tab TB336FU

  2. USB-C to Ethernet adaptor. The Cable Matters USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter worked well for us - particularly one that has an extra USB-C charging port (to prevent your tablet going flat). (link)

  3. A Router with at least 2 ethernet ports. We use the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 as it is compact. (link). It needs to be a router (not just a switch). Turn off WIFI on the router as it just adds to the WIFI congestion... we will be using the Ethernet Ports.

  4. Two standard ethernet network cables.

Tablet TIP: When using an Ethernet cable, turn WIFI off on the tablet. Otherwise the tablet connection will be unreliable.

In our experience, when using Android Tablets... it is easiest to use a router.  Plugging your Tablet ethernet cable straight into the mixer Ethernet port would work off the bat. Even when using a "cross-over" ethernet cable.

(On a side note, I believe it is possible to connect directly via Etehrnet cable without a router if you change your Tablet/PC IP to 10.10.2.2. But some tablets won't allow you to choose its IP... and then this setting may effect WIFI use later.)

The Router wiring is as follows:

  1. Plug the first Ethernet cable from the Mixer to a Router LAN port. (WAN may not work - unless it is configured as a LAN).

  2. Plug the second Ethernet cable from another Router LAN port into your USB-C to Ethernet adaptor.

  3. Plug the Ethernet adaptor in the tablet.

Mixer Settings

The IP the mixer uses the following IP

  • 10.10.1.1: Mixer IP when connected via WIFI
  • 10.10.2.1: Mixer IP when connected via Router/Ethernet
  • 10.10.2.2: Tablet/Computer IP when connected directly into the Mixer Ethernet Port (without a router). You'll need to set your device to use this static IP.

The mixer should work by default... but these are the settings we use:

Mixing Station Tablet App

We use the Mixing station App. You don't have too. We have set it up with two profiles... one for WIFI and one for ETHERNET. The difference being the IP.

Soundcraft UI24R Tablet WIFI

Router Settings

Set the Router Gateway to be 10.10.2.100. This way, the Mixer can use its own default IP of 10.10.2.1

I'd also recommend turning off the Router WIFI - as it will only add to the WIFI congestion. The Mixer's WIFI is excellent.
